Hibernation Hank
Groundhog Day in the United States has its roots in ancient European weather lore, where hibernating animals such as bears were thought to forecast the arrival of spring. This tradition, originally associated with the Roman Catholic feast of Candlemas on February 2nd, traveled to North America with European settlers. According to folklore, if a hibernating animal like a bear, badger, fox, or marmot emerged from its den on that day and saw its shadow, it signified an extended winter ahead.
In the United States, the tradition of predicting winter’s duration shifted from bears to groundhogs during the 19th century. Groundhogs such as Punxsutawney Phil and Georgia’s own General Beauregard Lee gained prominence as the iconic forecasters. However, amidst this transition, HIBERNATION HANK awakens in the BearBarrels of House Of Applejay Distillery, rekindling connections with this European tradition as a black bear celebrating this significant day, and forecasting the weather.
